Are You Undoing/Diluting Your Own SEO Results?!
Do you use multiple domain names for the one website or even multiple websites on the same business? Doing this can actually hinder your SEO impact rather than enhancing it, as you may have been expecting.
Just like with sales, you are much better to have someone giving 100% all of the time, than a team of people giving 50%-20%, some of the time!
The problem is that as small-medium businesses we have limited resources and budget for our marketing, so basically having multiple websites for the same business, and sharing your resources & budget across these is diluting your efforts!
So instead of one website getting 100% of your marketing, you are spreading this over multiple sites and the result can instead be your site getting and giving back 50%, 40%, 30% or less.
Your website is your number one salesperson, so imagine this scenario just like a salesperson/team. You are much better to have 1 salesperson giving 100% all of the time, than a team of sales people giving 50%-20%, some of the time! Logic tells you this simply won’t be as affective and consistent.
Also many people find it hard to write and especially reproduce content across multiple sites. So if you have 2 sites with common content, Google can pick up 'duplicate content' and disadvantage one or all sites.
Then we also have the other issues; such as multiple branding which is another great way to undo/dilute all your hard work?!...
(Also note that having multiple domains to one site can be detected by Google and if so, it will not help your rankings, or even worse...)
A single domain can more easily accumulate and share all available link value. It also requires a lot less effort than working on multiple domains.
Multiple websites can have some pros, but unless you have a good budget to put into both, then in most cases just one site and domain will be the winner.
For some or larger businesses, somewhere in the middle might just be the best the way to go. My suggestion is Only create a separate website when/if your audience is very different or wide ranging, and Only when/if you have the time/effort/budget to give both 100%. Make sure you have Analytics and/or other monitoring software on your site, watch and analyse this to see if/when you may need to consider more than one site.
This is a question I often get asked and I see many other businesses undertaking, thinking they are expanding their chances in Google, when instead they are often simply hindering them.
